Photochromic Eyeglass Lenses

Photochromic eyeglass lenses darken in response to light, fulfilling sun protection functions, and regain their transparency in the absence of light. They react not only to sunlight but also to UV rays. The darkening process in standard models takes about 2 minutes, and the lightening process takes between 5 and 8 minutes. Photochromic lenses (also known as heliomatic, photosolar) differ from each other in the speed of darkening, the degree of darkening, the residual color after lightening, and so on.

Fast-Reacting Photochromic Lenses

Some models of photochromic lenses darken significantly faster than others. They typically darken in about 20 seconds. Upon deactivation, they lighten in about 3 to 5 minutes. The newest models of this type of lens darken up to almost 90% outdoors, just like sunglasses. Many of them also have a blue light filter, which makes them suitable for working with electronic devices. You can find such models here.

Photochromic Lenses for Driving (Activating in the Car)

Car windows block most of the UV light, which means that standard photochromic lenses will not darken significantly even if you are driving on an extremely sunny day. However, new technologies allow some light-adaptive lenses to activate even from visible light alone. XTRActive type lenses darken even inside a car. For this reason, they are suitable for driving users. You can find such lenses here.

Thinned Photochromic Lenses

When your prescription (diopter) is higher than 2 and you desire a better aesthetic appearance for your glasses, and also in cases where the frame is semi-rimless (cord) or rimless (glazant), it is advisable to opt for thinned photochromic lenses. They are made from denser and more durable materials and are more suitable for these cases. You can find such lenses here.
